I had been looking forward to (and was terrified of) watching the infamous Monroe rape episode of
Too Close for Comfort, and I got all I asked for and more when I caught it last week! I
shared some thoughts over at
Kindertrauma. Let's just say I will never be the same!
Great job on the article, but I watched the episode on YouTube and honestly, wasn't sure what the fuss was over this particular storyline, especially after hearing so much about it on several retro blogs. Is it wrong that I laughed at it?
ReplyDeleteI should probably clarify before I am flamed...I didn't laugh at the notion of someone being sexually assaulted; I laughed at the end when Ted Knight confronted the "women" and was sat on by one of them. His character always seemed so naive and childlike to me that I'm not entirely convinced that he was "raped." I truly mean no disrespect towards any victims of sexual assault, but for some reason I didn't get a controversial vibe from this episode...maybe it was the canned laughter. If they were trying to teach a lesson then they missed the mark terribly.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam, I just saw your comments in my email and I wanted to say that I would never misconstrue what you said. And I agree that if there was a lesson to be learned, we have yet to know what it was.
ReplyDeleteI laughed a few times myself, but more out of the absurdity of how they were treating Monroe. It was truly out of character for the women to be completely removed and insensitive to his plight. Even if the R word doesn't occur, he was still abducted and a crime was committed, so for them to be so "Oh whatever," was horribly rude, I felt. Also, someone else pointed out that if this had happened to one of the daughters we'd be telling a different story.
To me, it's like A Very Special Episode on LSD!
And thanks so much for reading and commenting. All opinions are welcome at Casa by Night, and I always love hearing from you!
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for the article...I was trying to remember that TV movie the other day....awesome sauce!
ReplyDeleteThe part that puts it into the Twilight Zone for me is the reaction of the daughters which you pointed out was way out of character. I think it's just kind of a real eye opener when you realize that some people's reaction to a sexual assault is not based on the crime itself but on who the victim is. (Not that the ep is not hilarious in its tastelessness)
ReplyDeleteMy brother and I did watch this show but I guess not all the time since I don't remember this episode. I will have to check it out on You Tube.
